Day 295 10/5
45miles (Oldenberg to Bonnerahe) Average speed 11.6 mph Top speed 26 mph
I got up at 8 and cooked egg and bacon with tea. Left at 10 with rain in the air. I was glad to have packed up in time to avoid it. I left the the campsite through the swimming pool, but there was still no-one at reception. As I hadn’t been able to access toilet or showers, I left, because it’s not my fault they can’t handle check in and out! I headed east as best I could but found navigation difficult with no battery. Eventually I stopped in Berne for coffee and found the ferry across the Wessel, €1.60 was a bargain after I had to go 12 miles out of my way yesterday to cross a river!
After the ferry I had to wait for a train to pass but it didn’t take long. I followed good cycle paths all the way today except for paved areas in towns and the occasional tree root. I made regular stops at Aldis and Lidls to buy batteries for radio and doughnuts with energy drinks to keep me going. I tried a McDonalds for wifi but there was no way of charging my phone so a quick coffee and I was off again. I avoided Bremen and went further north through small towns and villages.
I stopped by a campsite for a late lunch and I had no power for my phone and no sun to charge it and the next campsite was 13 miles away; it looked like raining and I needed a shower, so I checked in to this campsite and found a bio shop just up the road for some organic beer and set myself up outside the closed restaurant to cook pasta with chicken.
Phone charged, washing done and a full belly, all is well as I listen to the cuckoos and other birdsong all around me.
