Day 373 27th July
Leipzig
Another day off the bike.
Awake at 8.30 and cooked omelette with cheese and mushroom and lots of tea. I went for a long walk through the city and on to the zoo where I turned left and headed to the red bull stadium; home of Leipzig FC and the arena home of the champion ladies handball team.
Then I walked through the park and onto the horse racing track where I was glad to find a bookies open selling refreshing beer. So I had one and watched the racing from Yarmouth and enjoyed the high tech bookies and a great view of the track and stands.
I bought another beer to take up to the top of Fockerberg hill and set off in the rain. Thankfully the trees covered me for most of the walk unlike the people in the rowing boats who were getting drenched. I climbed probably the most difficult but shortest route to the top as I was tired of walking by now. At the top I enjoyed great views of the city, but it was a bit weird knowing that this mound, now mainly forest, was built with the remains of the bombed buildings from the Second World War.
Then I went back to the hostel and met William from Northern Ireland and had a great chat about footy of the seventies and eighties, as he supported Liverpool and we talked all about about the state of current day footy too along with many other topics. We had a really good time and I think that he is missing this, as he now lives in Panama. I went to bed early and then followed the women’s footy on bbc live text as England beat Portugal and Scotland narrowly missed out against Spain.
