Day 391 14th August
50 miles (Kutna Hora to Krucemburk) Average speed 10mph Top speed 29mph
I got up at 8 and had brekkie of toast, cheese and spam with tea made in the kitchen. I said farewell to the German scouts and headed off in the wrong direction. I can’t believe how many times I have done this, bearing in mind I had internet and maps all night, but still managed to go the wrong way.
I took the road west towards Prague but soon realised and turned off to head south. This took me on a much more scenic route though and avoided a lot of the 38 main road, so it turned out much better, even if a little hilly. I stopped at a bus stop for my first rest in a small village next to a house built in 1734. Then again when I reached the 38 road for a cold drink and chocolate bar. Then I went on the 38 until, after a lot of roadworks, I arrived at a big hill and after checking the map for campsites decided to go back to the turn off for Habry, where I bought lunch in the co-op and ate by the lake.
Then I took the road to Chotebor which was much quieter but had the occasional lorry and the surface showed that this was a lorry hotspot. I stopped off for another break with some cows and their calves before joining the 37 and tried to follow the map to my campsite, but it took me to the wrong side of the lake and across a couple of big hills.
When I arrived at the map location they said there was no camping there, but the guy offered to show me the way on his bike, very kind of him, but as it was just the other side of the lake I chose to go it alone. Of course this meant more hills and a country cycle path but it was worth it when I arrived.
It’s a lovely campsite and I am at the top of a hill overlooking the lake. I had a couple of beers and chicken with dumplings followed by a meringue for dessert before lighting a campfire and watching the stars.
