Day 405 28th August
46 miles (Zalalovo to Letenya via Slovenia) Average speed 12.4 mph Top speed 30 mph
I was up at 8.30 and ready to go but reception didn’t open until 11 so I had a shower and then went to pay, but the lady didn’t speak any English and I somehow ended up paying 8700 for the two nights I’d stayed. I couldn’t find the original receipt for the first night as I’d used it to light the fire.
An incredibly quick day on good roads if sometimes a few too many lorries. I left along the main road up a reasonably big climb and then joined the 86 main road, which was like a motorway but without the hard shoulder. It wasn’t too busy for a Monday morning but there were quite a few big lorries. Then it was downhill most of the way and amazingly quick, the first hour saw an average speed of 14 mph and that included the climb. I turned off and headed south to Lenti where I bought a Fanta and stopped at a railway crossing for a very small tourist train. It must be quite touristy as an open minibus also passed me.

Then it was on to Slovenia but I only popped in for ten minutes and couldn’t find anywhere suitable for lunch so went back and headed for Letenye. There were some very odd bird songs along the route and it sounded like an alarm, so I kept checking my phone, but they were definitely coming from the long grass. I arrived and hadn’t had lunch, only muesli for brekkie but I checked out the campsite and the thermal baths are free to campers so decided to stay.
I went into town and changed up 10€ at the bank and bought some dinner and a couple of beers to have around the campfire which was already prepared for me. On my return the threat of another storm was imminent, so I secured the tent and went for a swim, with my bike under a covered table. It was wonderful to relax in the warm pool with water jets and a canopy. There were a few other bathers and when the rain started it was the best place to be so I stayed and got wrinkly fingers! By the time I’d had a beer and crisps the rain stopped in time for me to cook dinner on the open fire which I’d covered before swimming. I had tuna and sweet corn with onions and pasta before an early night.
