Day 427 20th September
Mestre to Venice
Day off bike through necessity as no bikes allowed in Venice.

No cycling in Venice – among other things!
I got up at 8 after a good nights sleep. I had a shave and brushed my teeth and had a great brekkie of ham, cheese, salami, bread, croissant and jam with lots of espressos. I chatted with Lucy and Giuseppe and told them about Brazil.
Then I went sightseeing around Venice

Venice

Rialto Bridge

St. Mark’s Square – high tides flood the square
before checking in to Hotel Kemplinksi :

Thanks Bernie. Sorry you can’t be here to enjoy.
I relaxed for a while by the pool

Poolside
Then I went back to the Irish Bar in the evening to watch football, and have the following discussion on Facebook :

Ref checking the VAR – replay
“Watching footy in a bar in Venice and I’m surprised to find that the referee is using video replays on the halfway line. When did this come into play?? It’s a bit like rugby league without the big screen replays.
James Grimward; A lot has changed since you’ve been away B….
Brian Allen; I’m so out of touch. Are you telling me this happens in UK? Because it would certainly irradiate all the diving that goes on in the premier league. Goal line tech is nothing compared to this. It might even make me watch the dross that goes on there.
Brian Allen; Eradicate even
Andy Groom; VAR started this season in Serie A, it’s weird. The game stops, VAR is displayed on the big screen – players and fans hang around and have a chat whilst the ref watches telly and then he gives the decision everybody thought he should. Needs to be modified, that said it’s stopped a few blunders.”
