Day 511 13th December
56 miles (Maracaipe to Barra Grande) Average speed 10.4 mph Top speed 35 mph
A great day of venturing inland.
I got up at 5.30 and had brekkie of sausage and fried egg sarnies. We left at 7.15 and went back to Galinhas to get money and then took the road inland, which was a good ride into the country side with lots of greenery and lakes. After a bit of a climb it was downhill all the way to the right turn which took us to a bridge across a river and a left turn onto the busy A road. Occasionally there was a hard shoulder but most of the way not and a few cars and buses came very close.

Not always a hard shoulder for us to ride on
We stopped at a petrol station for a large bottle of Fanta, energy bars and a Spanish sweet delicacy of nuts and pure sugar and a loo break to fill up water bottles. Then it was up a long hill and through sugar cane fields smelling very sweet. We stopped for lunch of empanadas and a sausage in breadcrumbs. Then it was up another long hill which became the story of the afternoon as we entered the biological park of Salintinho.

Nature reserve
There were bamboo trees going all the way over the top of the road and the shade made for a very welcome relief. Eventually we made it back to the coast and stopped at another garage for Sprite and strawberry biscuits. Another very tired six flat miles brought us to a wonderful campsite run by Ronald from Kansas.
We had a shady spot, kitchen, swimming pool and hammocks plus good WiFi. We bought some bangers and mash with peas and gravy for dinner and had a few beers. Then went to the beach with a beer to take in the waves and stars. Unfortunately Frankie lost his phone there and despite a moonlit search and another one at sunrise in the morning we didn’t find it. I think the sea may have taken it away!! In bed by 9.30 and had a good cooler nights sleep.

Sunrise – search for Frankie’s phone
