Day 512 14th December
30 miles (Barra Grande to Sao Miguel dos Milagros) Average speed 8.5 mph Top speed 33 mph
Up at 5 beachcombing for phones! But without success, so we had brekkie of ham and cheese toasties and leftover sausages. We took our time to get going and left at 9. It was good to have WiFi, if only for awhile. We said goodbye to Ronald when he left at 8, trusting us with his house and property and we signed the guest book. As I left I dropped my gloves twice and struggled in the sand, but eventually made it to the main road and turned left heading south. We stopped briefly to see the beach at Maragogi and continued along the good main road.

Maragogi
After an hour we stopped for a sprite with a sleeping dog and a buggy taxi and when we asked the driver if the ferry was open to bikes, he thought we were going to mug him, as we approached him from both sides. I’m not sure we look very dangerous on our bikes, but he said the ferry was open.

On board the ferry
So we took the left fork to Japaratinga, which became six miles of torture for me as it was a poorly cobbled street all the way. Just before we got there Carlos and a lady told us of a natural spring shower in the village and asked to meet us there for a chat as they were part of a cycling federation. We took a refreshing shower and chatted for a while, then had lunch of ham and cheese sarnies on the beach.

Sandwiches on the beach
Wild camp.
