Day 519 21st December
11 miles ( Aracaju) Average speed 10 mph Top speed 24 mph
Well after two big days of 65 and 75 miles my body has had enough. Last night I camped in Aracaju but I didn’t spend much time in my tent! I spent most of the night in the toilet block with Freddie the frog. Gastroenteritis meant I’d had no more than an hours sleep. I think this was due to the 2 large burgers I had the night before from a kiosk in the centre of Japoate. Thankfully the two massive flying cockroach type creatures didn’t get me and I evicted them from my £5 a night room but not before one flew up my shirt , which meant I strained my shoulder. This is the first time I’ve felt this bad on the entire trip.
I had nothing to eat for brekkie, but I couldn’t have faced food anyway.I packed up very slowly, trying to keep in the shade of the palm trees. I just had no energy and felt weak. I considered trying to get to the next campsite 27 miles away, but realised I was not going to make Salvador by Christmas and wisely found a hostel only a couple of miles away. During this tough packing up time I was lifted by some small monkey type of animals chatting away and playing in the trees. They even kept still long enough for me to take some pictures.

Marmoset in the palm trees, kept me company this morning
I left at about 8.30 and found the hostel quite easily. The check in was meant to be from 1 pm but I think they may have taken pity on me and let me in early via google translate. The receptionist was very helpful and could probably see that I needed a bed!
Now I’ve checked in to the Aju hostel which is lovely with air con and a pool, so hopefully drinking black tea and plenty of rest should see me enjoy Christmas on the beach. I hope you all have a good Christmas and a wonderful new year! Missing you all.
Anything is possible if you really want to be adventurous!!
Hostel Aju 36 reais +12 for brekkie.
