Day 580 20th February 2018
5 miles (Mangaratiba to Ilhe Grande) Average speed 4.4 mph Top speed 12 mph
I got up at 6.30 with the alarm, and had coffee and ham and cheese rolls for brekkie. Then I took the short ride to the ferry. 17 reais secured at ticket and the bike went free. The ferry took nearly two hours and it was a bit choppy but the scenery was great.
On arrival I searched for a campsite but it was tricky as there was so much choice. I stumbled across this place and the guy sitting by the entrance was impressed with the bike and asked about my trip. I found a good spot with power, WiFi and right next to the kitchen.
As it was early I set up and went for a ride to the secluded beaches at the end of the road. There was a decent path and I rode a fair way exploring the wildlife with lots of beautiful butterflies and some rather large crabs. There was also the ruin of what was a mansion and then a penal colony, although originally becoming a quarantine location to avoid European migrants bringing in cholera.
Then I went in search of a bar to watch Chelsea v Barca, only to find that while cooking dinner, it was on in the campsite. So I could watch the game whilst listening to the Os beat Chester 1-0.
I was ready for bed by 7 but decided to go and sit on the pier with another beer before bed.
Camping do bicao 30 reais.
