Day 418 10th September
41 miles (Rejeika to Kapelica) Average speed 11.2 mph Top speed 32 mph
I got up at 7 and was checking computer stuff as hostel had a pc. Several cups of tea and a brekkie of pate and tomato sarnie later, I checked out at 10 and watched the Vuelta from Spain, as quite a few took some big falls descending the mountains in the rain. My washing was due back at 11 but the man arrived at 10.10 so I sorted out clean smelling clothes and sleeping bag and packed.
It was a very windy and cloudy morning and the sea was spraying up over the sea wall as I left at 10.45.
The clouds were building and as I had the wind behind me I tried to outrun them but the inevitable happened and they caught up with me after about 20 minutes. It was fairly light rain to start with, so I only used my lightweight jacket, as it was quite warm. I made good progress in the first hour and was flying with the wind assistance, but as I turned left and went through the pretty town of Opajia the rain started to get a bit heavier.
It was an enjoyable ride though along that stretch of coastline, with small climbs followed by good downhills and I was amazed how many people were staring at me as if I were crazy. Well, I am!, and the rest of the day proved so. The rain got much worse as the day progressed and as I stopped for lunch in a bus shelter in Brsec I was very tempted by the many apartments for rent, but a quick check online showed that they were all way above my price range. So I carried on, but now with a bit more energy after my peanut flavoured crisps.
