Day 631 12th April 2018
41 miles (Piraju to Ourinhos) Average speed 10 mph Top speed 38 mph
I got up at 8 for brekkie of ham and cheese rolls, cake and melon with coffee and OJ.
I said goodbye to the otherwise unimpressed old receptionist until he saw my bike and had lots of questions. I set off up the big climb on the other side of the river and made it to the top after about 30 minutes. There were many more hills to come, but first it was downhill all the way back to the sp270. It was very hot once again and the hills were pretty hard work, the morning was very tough, but at least I now had a good hard shoulder to keep me away from the lorries and traffic.

Good wide hard shoulder to give me some protection from the traffic
I stopped at a garage for a drink, but didn’t fancy paying 15 raeis for a burger and the restaurant was upstairs and too far away from the bike. So I continued onto Chavantes and found a roadside cafe. They only had the set meal and no snacks and as I was in no rush I had a good plate of steak, chicken, rice, beans and salad with a bottle of water for 17 reais. The guy welcomed me, but his wife was quite rude when I’d finished and obviously thought I was about to do a runner as she asked me to pay up as I was packing my bike and getting dressed. They had a car parked there so I’m not sure how far she thought I would get away for £4?? After such a good meal it left a bad taste in my mouth so much so that as I left I went the wrong way and had to go all the way around a lake to get back to the road.
